Victory
Following the death of guitarist Casey Calvert and a prolonged legal spat with Victory Records, Hawthorne Heights returned to the studio to record Fragile Futures. Anguished and dramatic, the album sheds most of Hawthorne Heights' connections to the screamo genre while clinging to a mix of chugging guitars and cathartic punk-pop melodies.

This week, Randy Newman returns with Harps and Angels his first collection of new songs in nearly 10 years. Newman might not have any new tricks up his sleeve -- as always, there's a bunch of rolling New Orleans shuffles, sardonic wit, melodramatic Hollywood pop and sweet ballads -- he's in top form as a writer and the stripped-down, no-frills production brings to mind some early '70s highwater marks as 12 Songs and Sail Away.

Shedding his Bright Eyes moniker, Conor Oberst headed down to Mexico to record the first album he's released under his birthname since his teens. Supported by a group for friends he's dubbed the Mystic Valley Band, Oberst doesn't depart from his blend of quivering introspective folk and shambling country-rock, but there's a subtle difference: he's less self-conscious, so the album feels relaxed in a way Bright Eyes albums rarely do.
