Featured Albums:

The Game
LAX
Geffen

On his third official full-length, West Coast hero the Game puts his Dr. Dre worship and beefing with 50 Cent on ice, at least for the moment. Without these obsessions, L.A.X. is the least focused album out of the rapper’s official three, but brilliant tracks like “Touchdown” and the moving "Letter to the King” just wouldn’t be possible if the Game was still stuck on yesterday’s news. A long guest list that goes from Lil Wayne to Travis Barker plus a set of well chosen producers help the rapper expand his horizons.

Solange
Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams
Geffen

Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams is an entirely different affair when compared to Solange's 2003 debut -- fun, silly, slightly eccentric and, most importantly, fearless. Steeping an album in classic Motown and other R&B sounds of the late '60s and early '70s may not be the wildest maneuver in 2008, but throughout, there is a kind of frolicsome adventurousness that is singular and undeniable, even when Solange lets loose with the sourness and addresses her false public image.

Urban, Neo-Soul

cover

Matthew Sweet
Sunshine Lies
Shout! Factory

Over the last few years, Matthew Sweet has pursued a soft, lush pop direction, crafting exquisite Beach Boys tributes and a '60s covers album with Susannah Hoffs. With Sunshine Lies, Sweet moves back to the guitar-heavy power-pop that made him a cult favorite with 1991's Girlfriend, turning in a tight, tuneful record that puts his crystalline hooks and big guitars in the forefront.

The Verve
Forth
RED

Eleven years after Urban Hymns, a reunited the Verve finally deliver a follow-up with Forth. Filled with rolling melodies and spacious guitars, Forth is a sequel in the purest sense of the word, offering more of the same sound of Urban Hymns, which is something that may please the devoted that have waited over a decade for a new record.
