Featured Albums The Jesus and Mary Chain The Power of Negative Thinking: B-Sides & Rarities Blanco Y Negro/Rhino Collecting all of the influential Scottish noise-pop band's various B-side singles, cover songs, and sundry demos in one terrific package, The Jesus and Mary Chain's 2008 Rhino four-disc box set The Power of Negative Thinking: B-Sides & Rarities offers a unique view of the Reid Brothers' rise from lo-fi punks with a kind of D.I.Y. Phil Spector Wall of Sound to their time as '90s alt rock icons. College Rock, Noise Pop, Post-Punk, Alternative Pop/Rock Mercury Rev Snowflake Midnight V2 After the almost too-personal Secret Migration, Mercury Rev return with Snowflake Midnight, a set of songs that keep the wide-eyed, earnest lyricism of their previous album but pair it with chilly electronics. As delicate and contemplative as its title suggests, Snowflake Midnight is Mercury Rev's subtlest album in some time. Dream Pop, Neo-Psychedelia, Indie Rock, Alternative Pop/Rock Roy Orbison The Soul of Rock and Roll Legacy The Soul Of Rock and Roll, is Sony Legacy's second attempt at a comprehensive Roy Orbison box. It puts the first one--the Legendary Roy Orbison--to shame. Both are four discs, but at 107 cuts, the new one contains 33 more than its predecessor --12 of which are previously unreleased. Even more important is sound. the preceding one, issued in 1988, fell victim to the limited remastering knowledge of the era, where as this new set is worthy of its subject. Pop/Rock, Pop, Rock & Roll, Rockabilly Todd Rundgren Arena Hi Fi Todd Rundgren makes a thunderous return to guitar-heavy arena rock with an album quite appropriately called Arena. Pitched halfway between the big sound of Utopia and more melodic solo work like The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect, Arena also carries quite a bit of the bile and protest of 2004's Liars. Another thing it shares with that excellent LP is that it finds Rundgren embracing his strengths, turning this into a very strong, muscular rock record. Paper Trail Grand Hustle/Atlantic With a year of jail time on the horizon, T.I. unsurprisingly produces an album that carries more urgency and self-reflection than the holding pattern that was T.I. vs T.I.P. He still allows room for plenty of escapist fare, like the current number one single "Whatever You Like." Southern Rap, Gangsta Rap Robin Thicke Something Else Star Trak/Interscope The smooth and suave follow-up to the number five chart hit The Evolution of Robin Thicke, Something Else benefits greatly from its relative brevity and the fact that it is the singer's most focused, least scattered, and least dilettantish set. Everything has a deeper resonance.
