Kenny Chesney Lucky Old Sun [Deluxe Edition] Blue Chair/BNA/Sony BMG
Kenny Chesney may name his twelfth album after the old standard "That Lucky Old Sun" but this isn't his variation on Willie Nelson's Stardust -- it's an exceedingly mellow album, so low-key that it could be called Lazy Old Sun. This is designed to be a soundtrack to a relaxed afternoon on the beach and while that's good as far as it goes, Chesney could do something a lot more interesting in the sun besides lazing around.

Nikka Costa Pebble to a Pearl Stax
Nikka Costa takes the history of her new label Stax to heart, turning Pebble to a Pearl into an back-to-basics soul album, the kind that Stax used to put out in their heyday. Costa's album may lack not quite live up to that gold standard, but she sounds terrific fronting a live band that gets the old-school funky R&B vibe just right.

Keane Perfect Symmetry Island
An energetic "Whoooooo!" opens up Keane's third album, which re-introduces the British balladeers as fun-loving piano popsters. Synthesizers and guitars pepper the record, while frontman Thom Chaplin sings about hearts, emails, and lovers. For a group whose meteoric success was nevertheless accompanied by criticism of the band's passionate, over-earnest approach, Perfect Symmetry helps expand Keane's range and resume.

Ray LaMontagne Gossip in the Grain RCA
Ray LaMontagne's third album is easily his most diverse, half a world away from the unmitigated darkness of Til The Sun Turns Black. Partnering once more with producer Ethan Johns, he indulges his passions for soul, moody British-Isles folk, psychedelic acoustic jazz, and richly textured--rock.
