New Releases for January 29

Please Take Note … The Recorded Music Industry is facing some interesting challenges at the moment. Demand for physical formats of recorded music has increased significantly during 2020 and production capabilities have been affected somewhat adversely due to COVID-19 spread prevention and concerns.
Consequently, release schedules are being affected here and there and some titles are being pushed back by a week or two. Therefore, it is possible that not everything on our list will be available on the day projected and we may not know that for sure until the day of the scheduled release unfortunately.
In addition, items that are coming from outside of the country may be facing additional issues leading to delays. Import items are typically showing up one to two weeks late. This has been the case for the better part of the past year in fact.
So … hang in there and try to understand and be patient. Things SHALL improve.
Thank you for your support of the physical format of music. And thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the support of independent stores throughout the planet.
You are loved and most appreciated.

P.s. Not everything coming out and that we are bringing in has been put up on our website. We try to keep some things for a nice and pleasant surprise.

With Along For The Ride British blues icon John Mayall presented an equal counterpart to John Lee Hooker’s The Healer. In 2001, on the occasion of his 40th stage anniversary, the “Father of British Blues” recorded traditional variations of his favorite music with supreme serenity and with an impressive all-star line-up of blues and rock luminaries such as Gary Moore, Mick Fleetwood, Billy F Gibbons, Otis Rush, Chris Rea and Peter Green (to only name a few). The class reunion of former Bluesbreakers and musical contemporaries is a must-have for every blues fan!

Limited 180gm orange colored vinyl LP pressing. Upon release in 1971, Africa’s Blood was the first record Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry released under his own name, although his band The Upsetters do appear on most of the tracks. If any album serves as a good peak into what was happening in Jamaican music in the early 70s, ‘Africa’s Blood’ is the way to go. There is an undeniable influence from American contemporary R&B, but still Perry’s signature dub and reggae fusion shines through. A limited edition on orange coloured vinyl, which makes the record look as vibrant as it sounds.

Import … Music On Vinyl Limited 180gm translucent red vinyl LP pressing. Includes insert. Stain (1993) is the third album by Living Colour, released after previous albums Vivid and Time’s Up. The album features a much heavier and aggressive Living Colour, containing elements of thrash metal and industrial music. Produced by Ron ‘Bad Brains’ St. Germain, Living Colour’s ‘Stain’ showcases the band’s darker side even more, as samples were now added to the sonic mix. Living Colour’s pessimistic viewpoint can be found in tracks such as ‘Go Away’,’ ‘Ignorance Is Bliss’, and ‘Never Satisfied’, while ‘Postman’ pulls no punches in it’s depiction of a deranged killer. The explosive ‘Ausländer’ is one of the album’s best tracks, as is the melodic rocker ‘Leave It Alone’ and the superb ballad ‘Nothingness’.

Limited vinyl LP pressing. Coney Island Baby is the sixth solo studio album by Lou Reed, released December 1975.

The following albums are certainly very worthy of description … however, as you may note, there’s a lot of releases scheduled for the 29th … Therefore, I’m limiting commentary to keep a lid on the fingers and time … and, I’m falling back on the notion that a picture is worth a thousand words … and perhaps a few questions as well … the answers of which will be supplied by a visit to the Record Store!!!

STRFKR’s sound has morphed over the years through variations of hyper catchy, danceable pop, but on Ambient 1 – the band’s first fully instrumental album – the band has achieved something very different. For a little shy of an hour, Ambient 1 drifts through softly glowing electronic instrumentals that extract the synth core from the group’s well established synth pop sound. It’s patient, playful, and calming music that travels through passageways of chaos and anxiety on a journey towards healing.Upon completing work on the lo-fi dreaminess of Future Past Life, STRFKR’s principal songwriter Josh Hodges found himself returning repeatedly to albums by his favorite ambient artists and minimal composers. This growing obsession with synthesis and the culture around it also concurred with the daily darkness of the pandemic and some personal disruptions. Without spending too much time thinking about what it meant, Hodges began recording ambient experiments almost daily as a way of processing these difficult emotions. Echoes of masters like Harold Budd and Brian Eno can be heard in the angelic floating of “Work Smoothly Lifetime Peace” while tracks like “Nexus” are stormy and frenetic. In some ways, Ambient 1 is unlike anything STRFKR has created before, but when completely absorbed, it makes sense why it’s included under the STRFKR banner. Even at his most drony and experimental, Hodges can’t escape his distinctive melodic approach. Ambient 1 strips away the familiar and the expected, exposing Hodges’ signature sonic personality at a granular level.

Double red and white marbled vinyl LP pressing. 2021 release. Germany’s heavy-metal kings return with their 16th studio album and fifth featuring vocalist Mark Tornillo. Compact Disc Releases

REVOLUTIONARY LOVE – Ani DiFranco – RIGHTEOUS BABE – The transcendent new album from Ani Di Franco, Revolutionary Love marks the latest proof of one of her most powerful gifts as an artist: a rare ability to give voice to our deepest frustrations and tensions, on both a personal and political level. “My songs have always reflected an acute connection between my personal life and the life of my society,” says the trailblazing musician and activist. “As I started to come out of years of dealing with marriage problems, I saw my entire country in the same situation; the complete breakdown of communication and loss of empathy and connection. But after what seems like unforgivable damage, then where do you go? You can’t kick each other off the planet, you can’t change the past, so what then?”

Building on the themes of their critically acclaimed album Among The Ghosts, “family” is at the center of Lucero’s new album When You Found Me. The album reimagines family stories as modern fables, with young heroines and storybook lyrics inspired by the fairy tales lead singer Ben Nichols’ reads with his four year old daughter at bedtime. Throughout When You Found Me, true stories are turned into fantasy and folktales are reimagined into pummeling rock songs.

The first of Grammy Award-winning blues and rock icon Johnny Winter’s celebrated Alligator releases, with over 100,000 sold in the U.S. alone. This reissue has one song from the original release removed (Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye), and a previously unreleased track featuring guest James Cotton, “Nothin’ But The Devil,” added.

Import … CD reissue. The underrated trumpeter Freddie Hubbard plays some very tasty Bebop Jazz here. The band assembled for ‘Straight Life’ pretty much explains why; Joe Henderson on sax, George Benson on guitar, Herbie Hancock on piano/keyboards, Ron Carter on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. To say that these masters are at the top of their game here is an understatement. They make ageless music with passion, freedom, and well-earned wisdom. Freddie unloads here right from the start and Joe Henderson catches the fire too as he blazes like never before. George Benson also is a standout with his creative solo and occasional flurries of notes. ‘Straight Life’ may very well pave the way for pop and rock fans to get themselves into jazz.

THE FUTURE BITES sees Wilson exploring contemporary addiction and the lasting effect of technology on our daily lives. The album marks his most inventive and far-reaching musical construction to date, spanning soaring acoustics, lush electronica, relentless bass-driven grooves, murky funk, and so much more, all linked through powerfully focused songcraft.
