Vinyl Releases

The following are some of the highlights for this Friday, May 7 … there are more newbies at the store than what you see here.
Happy 75th to Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead!
Happy 60th to Phil Campbell, Guitarist for Motorhead!

Van Morrison will release ‘Latest Record Project: Volume 1’ on May 7th on Exile/BMG. His 42nd record and his most dynamic and contemporary album in years, ‘Latest Record Project: Volume 1’ is a 28-track delve into his ongoing love of blues, R&B, jazz and soul. However much you may love his classic albums, this new project proves that he’s living in the present, and remains an artist of integrity and distinction.
“I’m getting away from the perceived same songs, same albums all the time,” says Morrison. “This guy’s done 500 songs, maybe more, so hello? Why do you keep promoting the same ten? I’m trying to get out of the box.”
‘Latest Record Project: Volume 1’ is the result of our enforced period of isolation. Unable to tour, Morrison remained busy with constant songwriting, starting ideas on piano, guitar or saxophone. What emerged is a wealth of new material, which shimmers with a directness and vibrancy that comes from working with a rhythm section with whom he shares an immediate, spontaneous.
Latest Record Project Volume 1
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard … Demos Vols. 1&2 … Limited Black Vinyl already not available from the supplier.
Angel Olsen … Originally conceived as a double album, All Mirrors and Whole New Mess were distinct parts of a larger whole, twin stars that each expressed something bigger and bolder than Angel Olsen had ever made. Released in 2019, All Mirrors is massive in scope and sound, tracing Olsen’s ascent into the unknown, to a place of true self-acceptance, no matter how dark, or difficult, or seemingly lonely. All Mirrors is colossal, moving, dramatic in an Old Hollywood manner. Recorded before All Mirrors but released after, Whole New Mess is the bones and beginnings of the songs that would rewrite Olsen’s story. This is Angel Olsen in her classic style: stark solo performances, echoes and open spaces, her voice both whispered and enormous. All Mirrors and Whole New Mess presented the two glorious extremes of an artist who, in these songs, became new by embracing herself entirely.
Now, with Songs of the Lark And Other Far Memories, these twin stars become a constellation with the full extent of the songs’ iterations: all the alternate takes, b-sides, remixes and reimaginings are here, together. Alongside, a 40-page book collection tells a similar story, not just through outtakes and unseen photos but through the smaller, evocative details: handwritten lyrics, a favorite necklace, a beaded chandelier. As if it could be more plainly stated (there’s nothing more), Angel adds one cover here: a loving, assertive rendition of Roxy Music’s “More Than This.” It is a definitive collection, not just of these songs but of their revelations and their writer, from their simplest origins to their mightiest realizations.

Vinyl LP pressing. The Beat Farmers, one of roots rock’s most beloved but unsung combos, is finally getting their due with a reissue of their classic 1985 debut album, Tales of the New West. Tales Of The New West is considered an American Roots Rock Classic that influenced and helped pave the way for the many bands for the much larger Americana movement that came later. Special guests on Tales Of The New West include Peter Case of the Plimsouls, Chip and Tony Kinman of Rank & File, Vicki Peterson of the Bangles, Sid Griffin of the Long Ryders, as well as future Beat Farmer Joey Harris. The album was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos. This classic 1985 album has been digitally re-mastered and comes in beautiful gatefold packaging along with complete liner notes, as well as archival photos and numerous other collectable images.
Robin Mcauley … Limited 180gm Crystal vinyl LP pressing. Standing on the Edge truly encompasses all of the musical styles Irish rock singer Robin McAuley is known for: hard rock and melodic rock superbly performed as only he can. Envisioned, overseen, and creatively directed by Serafino Perugino, President and A&R director of Frontiers Records with production (and co-writing) by Alessandro Del Vecchio, McAuley offers up a true gem of an album here. Included are a splendid songwriting collaborations with his former Grand Prix bandmate Phil Lanzon (currently longtime Uriah Heep keyboardist) on “Like a Ghost,” Howard Leese (Bad Company, Heart) on “Supposed To Do Now,” and Tommy Denander on “Do You Remember” and “Chosen Few.”
Iron & Wine … Vinyl LP pressing. Archive Series Volume No. 5: Tallahassee is the lost-in-time debut album from Iron & Wine. A collection of songs recorded three years prior to his official Sub Pop debut, The Creek Drank the Cradle (2002). A period before the concept of Iron & Wine existed and principal songwriter Sam Beam was studying at Florida State University with the intent of pursuing a career in film. Tallahassee documents the very first steps on a journey that would lead to a career as one of America’s most original and distinctive singer-songwriters. Creek arrived like a thief in the night with it’s lo-fi, hushed vocals and intimate nature, while almost inversely Tallahassee comes with a strange sense of confidence. Perhaps an almost youthful discretion that likely comes from being too young to know better and too naïve to give a shit. The recordings themselves are more polished than Creek and give a peak into what a studio version of that record might have offered up. Tallahassee was recorded over the course of 1998-1999 when Beam and future bandmate EJ Holowicki moved into a house together.
Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing in gatefold jacket. Dexter Gordon had been living in Europe for several years when he recorded One Flight Up, one of his masterpieces, in Paris in 1964. It’s all here: Dexter’s magnificently huge sound, Donald Byrd in peak form on trumpet, the sophistication of pianist Kenny Drew, the brilliance of the then-teenaged bass phenom Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson and the rock-steady swing of drummer Art Taylor. Blue Note Tone Poet Series features all-analog remastering.
Limited ‘lizard eyes pink and yellow’ colored vinyl LP pressing. Teenage Gizzard is a compilation album featuring early recordings of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, recorded between 2010 and 2011 in Victoria, Australia. Org Music is participating in the band’s official “bootlegger” series to release the album on vinyl. A portion of the proceeds from the release will be donated to Save Our Stages (NIVA).
Limited 180gm colored vinyl LP pressing. The White Tape is a demo album released by Phish on cassette in 1986. Often cited as the first Phish “album”, The White Tape was originally a collection of original material that the band used as a demo/sample tape for venues. The album was widely circulated among Phish fans for more than a decade before being officially released in 1998. The album was created from four-track recordings over a period of three years and includes a number of outside musicians performing on various songs. Only “Alumni Blues”, “AC/DC Bag”, “Slave To The Traffic Light” and “Dog Gone Dog” (a.k.a. “Dog Log”) have the four band members together. The remaining tracks were recorded separately by various members and blended together to create the finished album.

Over that time, Leftover Salmon’s sound has grown and evolved while staying true to the roots and guiding spirit of the band’s founding members – mandolinist/singer Drew Emmitt and guitarist/singer Vince Herman.

The album represents a continuation of the project into a full collection of recordings and features cover versions of The Cure, Pixies, Deftones, Nick Cave, Gordon Lightfoot, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails and more.
Hooverphonic … When A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular with singer Liesje Sardonius was originally released in 1996, Hoover ran into a bit of legal trouble with the famous vacuum company and had to change their moniker to Hooverphonic.Luckily, it didn’t have any effect on their success. The album was a critical and commercial success. Janina Jade is a Swedish rock musician, singer, guitarist and songwriter. Her new album, Heart Of Rock N’ Roll features guitar virtuoso Jennifer Batten (Michael Jackson, Jeff Beck, solo artist) on lead guitar. Janina Jade’s music and lyrics are just as unique as her voice and guitar playing. They are honest, real, raw, full of unfiltered emotions and attitude, with a sense of danger and darkness from a hard life lived on the edge. This is honest Rock N’ Roll that invites the listener inside Janina’s mind and life.
Recorded between 2003 & 2008 and includes 6 previously unreleased performances. Mention the name Dickey Betts and the words “no introduction necessary” come to mind. Betts, who, with Duane Allman, designed an enduring style of rock guitar harmony in the original Allman Brothers Band. In this set recorded at various points between 2005 & 2008 in which he offered Allman Brothers hits as well as songs from his solo records, shows how important a guitarist Betts is, and how he still can connect with an audience. Throughout his guitar playing is the main attraction: ringing and biting, yet always melodic, soulful and heartfelt. Includes the songs “Jessica,” “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” “High Falls,” “Good Time Feeling,” “Blue Sky,” “Ramblin” Man,” “Seven Turns,” “Southbound,” “No One To Run With,” “Steady Rolling Man,” “Nobody Know,” and more.

Michael Nesmith has always travelled to the beat of a ‘Different Drum’whether as the writer of that classic hit for Linda Ronstadt and The Stone Poneys, the wool hat-clad member of The Monkees, or one of the earliest progenitors of the country-rock genre. In recent years, Nesmith has penned a critically acclaimed autobiography, reformed the First National Band to sold-out audiences, and both recorded and performed live to fans young and old with The Monkees. Now, Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records are proud to present a major deep dive into the Nez archives. Different Drum: The Lost RCA Victor Recordings features 22 tracks drawn from the RCA Victor vaults, every one of which is previously unreleased in any physical format. Over six RCA albums released between 1970 and 1973, Nesmith blossomed as a singer, songwriter, bandleader, and producer under the aegis of RCA Nashville legends Chet Atkins and Felton Jarvis. With bandmates including legendary pedal steel guitarist O.J. ‘Red’ Rhodes, John Ware, and John London, Nesmith pioneered country-rock with a spiritual and searching style all his own. Different Drum premieres on CD some of his most remarkable musical explorations from this vivid period including cosmic reimaginings of Monkees-era favorites like ‘Tapioca Tundra,’ ‘Magnolia Simms,’ ‘Circle Sky,’ and ‘Listen to the Band;’ unheard outtakes like ‘American Airman’ and ‘Six Days on the Road;’ vastly different alternate takes of ‘Different Drum,’ ‘Dedicated Friend,’ and ‘Tengo Amore;’ and even an early version of ‘Marie’s Theme’ from his cult classic multimedia project The Prison. The mind-altering music on Different Drum has been mixed from the original multitracks by Andrew Sandoval and mastered by Vic Anesini at Sony’s Battery Studios, while Papa Nez himself has contributed insightful new commentary to the liner notes by The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese. Rare photos by renowned photographer Henry Diltz and previously unseen images round out this landmark package. Different Drum is a freewheeling, widescreen journey through the world of one of rock’s greatest iconoclasts. Don’t take our word for it: listen to the band!
